King’s College Wimbledon 7+ Exam Format
The 7+ exam for KCJS is a multi-part assessment, and it’s designed to understand your child’s academic potential rather than just their knowledge at the time of the exam. Approximately 300 boys will sit the exam, with around 12 places available for entry. Here’s a breakdown of what your child can expect:
- Listening Test (25 minutes): This section requires your child to listen to a recording and then answer questions based on what they heard. For example, they might be asked to identify specific objects or instructions from a description, such as “underline the picture of the hippo with three spots.”
- Mathematics Paper (3 sections): The Maths exam consists of three sections, each lasting 10 minutes:
- Number Work: This assesses basic number skills, including addition and subtraction at the 7+ level.
- Mathematical Reasoning: In this section, candidates must demonstrate their mathematical understanding, often explaining their thought process in words.
- Investigation/Problem-Solving Task: This part focuses on open-ended questions where the process of solving the problem is just as important as the final answer. The school wants to see how your child approaches and thinks through problems.
- English Paper (45 minutes): The English paper includes a reading comprehension and creative writing section. For example, your child might be asked to write a story based on a picture cue, such as a girl with a scooter.
- Reasoning Paper (Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning): This part of the exam tests your child’s ability to identify patterns, solve puzzles, and think logically. It can include both verbal reasoning (related to language and words) and non-verbal reasoning (related to shapes and patterns).
Pass Marks and Target Scores for the King’s College Wimbledon 7+ Exam
To give your child the best chance of success in the 7+ exam, we recommend aiming for a 75%+ score in practice tests. While there’s no guarantee, scoring consistently at this level in practice papers can be a strong indicator that your child is on track to do well in the KCJS 7+ assessment.
